Excerpt from The Life of the Spider
Indeed, there is no question here of the human imagination. The insect does not be long to our world. The other animals, the plants even, notwithstanding their dumb life and the great secrets which they cherish, do not seem wholly foreign to us. In spite of all, we feel a certain earthly brotherhood in them. They often surprise and amaze our intelligence, but do not utterly upset it. There is something, on the other hand, about the insect that does not seem to belong to the habits, the ethics, the psychology of our globe. One would be inclined to say that the insect comes from another planet, more mon strous, more energetic, more insane, more atrocious, more infernal than our own. One would think that it was born of some comet.

I bought this book , as recommended by the Easy Peasy 3rd grade homeschool curriculum. My daughter reads somewhere between 5th - 6th grade level. The book would be interesting for someone older and interested in spiders. It's Easy Peasy's fault for suggesting this for young readers.Product details

The Life of the Spider Classic Reprint J Henri Fabre 9781332226900 Books Reviews
Let's keep this short and simple- Fabre was the inspiration for a lot of modern natural historians, including Gerald Durrell, who was literally bewitched by Fabre's style. This is early "popular" science without patronizing and not the slightest hint of dumbing down for a lay audience. The Life of the Spider is also faithfully in character with an accurate French translation. Fabre makes a thorough study of his subject, systematically dealing with each element of the spider life cycle.
It's not too much to say that Fabre effectively wrote the script for subsequent natural history books. Just as well he did. Fabre makes a point of being readable. He does consider his readers and doesn't get "oppressive" with terminology. He builds in his references. For anyone at any level of education, this is an entertaining, as well as an informative book.
Very engaging!
I read this to my kids and they love it
My daughter loves bugs! She has really gotten into this book. She loves sharing all of the interesting facts with me because she knows that I really don't like spiders. )
